How can I decorate my living room around a leather sofa?

It’s surprising how much of an impact that leather sofas can have on the appearance of a living room. With the sofa playing such an integral part in a living rooms decor, it’s beneficial to ensure that they work together cohesively. So, what is it that makes a sofa blend in perfectly with the rest of your living room? In this article, we will provide a number useful design tips to help you remodel your living room around your leather sofa.

Choose cushions that complement your leather sofa

The colour of cushion that is right for you will depend on the colour of your leather sofa. For example, if you choose a darker traditional leather sofa, lighter colour cushions would complement it brilliantly. You don’t have to opt for lighter cushions though; it really does depend on the type of look and feel that you are trying to convey. For example, if you have a brown Chesterfield sofa and you would like to create a Victorian style living room, patterned cushions in a silk material would be ideal. That being said, some leather sofas look better without cushions, which can sometimes take away from their natural beauty.

Incorporate wall art and plants to add contrast

While you may want your leather sofa to act as a main focal point, it’s nice to add some contrast. A great way to do this is incorporate wall art that consists of a number of colours. If you don’t want to incorporate a large piece of wall art, you could dot a number of smaller art pieces around the wall. By incorporating various smaller art pieces, you have the chance to add contrast in the form of interesting art. What’s more, wall art is a great conversational piece! Another great way in which you can add contrast to your living room is to include as plant or two. A great way to do this is to include a tall green plant next to your leather sofa. This will work as an accent colour in a similar way that cushions do.

Incorporate wooden items

Adding wooden items such as pine coffee tables or wooden shelves is a great way to balance out the overall decor of your living room. If you have a traditional leather sofa, you can create a sophisticated look by incorporating rich wooden items. If you have a dark leather sofa, opt for a coffee table that is made of oak or another light coloured wood. As mentioned above, it really does depend on the type of look that you’re trying to convey! However, when married with leather furniture, natural elements can lend a sophisticated, rich look to your living room.

Use a rug to split up your living room

Regardless of whether you have solid hardwood flooring or wall to wall carpeting, adding a rug is a great way to balance out the decor in your living room and separate your leather sofa from the flooring. Adding a rug is especially useful if your flooring is the same colour as your sofa. You can also connect your leather sofa with a rug by placing its front legs just over the edge of the rug. Doing this will create a pleasant conversation area, and you can also add club chairs to complete the circle. If you do decide to do this, it’s important that you choose a rug that complements the rest of your living room.

Paint your walls

While painting is not everyone’s cup of tea, it’s one of the quickest and most cost-effective ways to change the appearance and style of a living room. You can’t go wrong with neutral colours such as magnolia, pale yellow, and crème. However, if you want to be bold with your colour scheme, paint one wall white and another wall a bolder contrasting colour that matches your leather sofa or its accent colours. This is a relatively time efficient task which s should only take a few hours to complete but will have a considerable impact on the look and feel of your living room. If you have a smaller living room, avoid the use of dark colours as this can make your room look smaller than it actually is.
